Obituary

Published in the Middleburgh News, April 21, 1898

Miss Elizabeth Alverson died at her home in Norton Hill, Greene Co., Saturday, April 16, 1898. She was born at Huntersland in 1836, and was therefore 62 years of age, and was a daughter of Deacon Leonard Alverson, who died several years ago. The most of her life was spent at Huntersland where as seamstress she assisted in dressmaking in most of the families in that place. She was a member of the Christian church there and for years was the leading alto singer of the choir. In those days the choir was largely made up from the Alverson family. Deacon Alverson, her father, was leader, his sons William, Joseph and James and daughters Elizabeth and Mrs. Seth Owens were his faithful helpers. Nor would it be out of place in this connection to mention that his son-in-laws, Seth Owens and Benjamin Baker were also important members of the choir. Elizabeth Alverson was a beautiful singer, and her voice was lent a sweet charm to many an entertainment all along through her life. About 18 years ago she moved to Medusa and later became a resident of Norton Hill, but a few weeks ago she assisted in a concert there and it was at this time she first felt symptoms of the ailment that ended her days. She died from a tumor and was only sick about four weeks. She did not give up work until two weeks ago. Besides a large circle of friends and relatives she leaves three brothers, Wm. Alverson of Gloversville; Joseph Alverson, of Norton Hill; James K. Alverson, of this place, and Mrs. Seth Owens of this town to mourn her departure. Her remains were brought to Huntersland, and the burial took place fr om the Christian church on Tuesday. She was of a kind, loving disposition, and her happy, cheerful manners made her friends wherever she went. Ma ny a heart is sad because Libbie is no more. She died in that faith that sustained her through life, and has passed on to join the choir invisible, immortal, eternal, there to sing praises forever and ever.
