Death

David H. Crawford died on May 27, 1864 at North Anna, Va.[1][5] His death was unfortunate as he had made it through the battle and was killed at the end of the day when they were moving off the battle field. On that day, David had been one of three Color Guard Corporals, who were responsible for the national flags. He was wrapping up the flag to protect it as it was carried when he was shot in the head. At the time, Sgt Major Fred Lockley had stopped to help him and as David fell, Lockley grabbed the flag and took it to safety. David was buried on the battlefield.[1]
