On November 1, 1775, Robert enlisted in the service at Pomfret, Windham County, CT under Captain Waterman in the Regiment of Colonel Durkee for the term of one year.<br>

The Regiment was marched to Boston and when they arrived there Robert was selected to serve as a waiter to Major Grall Putman, Jr.. He served there in Boston until April 1, 1776 then removed to the Battle of Flatbush on Long Island. He remained with Major Putman and served as garrison to prevent soldiers from leaving after the battle until he was discharged in October of 1776. <br>

Birth

Robert Coates was born 15 Apr 1757 in Pomfret, Windham, Connecticut, United States, the son of Robert Coates and Elizabeth Saunders.[1]


Military

On November 1, 1775, Robert enlisted in the service at Pomfret, Windham County, CT under Captain Waterman in the Regiment of Colonel Durkee for the term of one year.
The Regiment was marched to Boston and when they arrived there Robert was selected to serve as a waiter to Major Grall Putman, Jr.. He served there in Boston until April 1, 1776 then removed to the Battle of Flatbush on Long Island. He remained with Major Putman and served as garrison to prevent soldiers from leaving after the battle until he was discharged in October of 1776.

Marriage & Children

Robert Coates married Abigail Blodget a daughter of Silas Blodgett and Abigail Kibbe. She died within a few years of their marriage and he then married her sister.
Robert Coates married Miriam Blodget (1774 – 1838) Their child was:

  • Sally Coates (Coats) (1799 – 1882) who married Benjamin Martin (1797 – 1852)

Death

Robert Coates died 3 Jul 1843.
