Joseph P. Chapman was born in 1847 in Berne to Alonzo Chapman (B. abt 1825, D. bet 1855-1860) and Lorena Gardner (B. Dec 28, 1819, D. Aug 22, 1895).[1] He was the oldest of four children.[1] His father died during Joseph's childhood.[1]
