Birth

Harmanus was born on September 27, 1776 a son of David Bogardus and Maria Harrison. [1]

Marriage & Children

On July 13, 1800 he married Ariantje (Harriet) Moak who was born on July 22, 1780, a daughter of Hendrick Moak and Elizabeth Heller[1]. Their known children:

  • Marie (Mary) Bogardus born April 6, 1801, married Wendell Long, died January 28, 1887[1]
  • Elizabeth Bogardus born September 12, 1802, married Jacob Waggoner[1]
  • Harriet Bogardus born March 25, 1810, died January 31, 1836[1]
  • David Henry Bogardus born October 6, 1816, died December 5, 1895[1]

Death

Harmanus died on January 13, 1831 in Westerlo and was buried at the Wideman Farm Burial Ground at Brayman’s Corners. Harriet died in 1836. [1]

He came from Feura Bush to New Salem and lived there until about 1822 when he apparently moved to Westerlo , where he died some 14 years later. Bi-centennial History of Albany: History of the County of Albany ..., Volume 2 By George Rogers Howell, Jonathan Tenney page 901 Harmanus Bogardus, a carpenter, came here from Feura Bush, erected buildings and kept a tavern. He also built a house for Judge Mead, where Michael Flansburgh now lives. At about 1822 Bogardus sold his property to Adam A. Clark, who continued the business for many years.
