Robert W. Clow Sr. EAST BERNE — Robert W. Clow Sr. was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and a successful barber. “He was a very happy, content man,” said his longtime companion, Virginia Mann. “And he enjoyed people. He liked very much to help others whether he knew them or not.” He died on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012, at his home in East Berne, with his family by his side. He was 80. Born in Stockport, N.Y., he was the son of the late Dewitt Clow and Margaret Ryant Clow. Raised in Albany, Mr. Clow graduated from Albany High School in 1949, and Schenectady’s Royal Barber School in 1953. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He later owned Bob’s Barber Shop and Bob’s Cut & Style on Congress Street in Troy for over 30 years. He was a member of the 105th Military Police at the Troy Armory, Troy Benevolent Protective Order of Elks Lodge #141, and the Speigletown District Volunteer Fire Company. “He was a gifted player of the organ and harmonica,” Ms. Mann said of Mr. Clow. “He started playing them after he retired…It was mostly a private thing.” Asked if he had a favorite song to play, she answered without hesitation: “Amazing Grace,” she chucked. “I heard that over and over.”

Mr. Clow is survived by two sons: Daniel Clow and his wife, Penny, of Speigletown; and John Clow and his wife, Delene, of Waterford; his daughter, Lynne Dolan and her husband, Bret, of Troy; 13 grandchildren: Robert Clow III, John and Shawn Clow, Breeanna, Ryan, and Colin Clow; Bret and Britney Dolan; Michele Hessel and her husband, John; Erika Geist; Jeremy, Jocelyn, and Corey Mann; one great-granddaughter; his brother, Charles Clow of Albany; and longtime companion Virginia Mann of East Berne and her children: Lisa Mann and her husband, Pat Hannan; and Jim Mann and his wife, Mary. His first wife, Lynne Chase Clow, died before him, as did his brother, Edward Clow. His son, Robert W. Clow Jr., died in 2005. Relatives and friends called at the McLoughlin & Mason Funeral Home in Troy on Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012. Cremation took place at the Gardner Earl Crematorium. A private burial of the urn took place on Friday morning, Sept. 7, 2012 at Elmwood Hill Cemetery in Troy.
