John Maher was born in Westerlo, Albany County, NY in about 1831.[1] He was a son of Patrick Mahar and Phebe Ten Eyck. By 1880, he and his family were using the name Mayer.

John married at about 1856, Jane A. Wiltsie who was born at about 1830 in NY. They had the following known children:

John was a policeman. By 1880, John and his family moved to Weehawken, Hudson Co., New Jersey, and John reportedly suffered from rheumatism, although he was working as a laborer.

Discharged July__1865. He now resides in Albany Citty 308 Little State St"[2]

Death
John died on November 21, 1892 at Weehawken, NJ. His widow, Jane, received her pension based on his Civil War service on November 30, 1892.
