Baltus was born at about 1842, a son of Martin Brate, Jr. and Mariah Dunbar.[1] He was a brother of Alexander, who also served in the Civil War.

The information from the 1850 census indicates that Alexander Brate and Baltus Brate were brothers, but the name given by Alexander on the register indicates that Alexander's mother was Mariah Dunbar. Baltus was 5 years older than Alexander.
