John H. Lewis was born about 1841 to Abram Lewis and Lavinia Ward of Knox, NY. He was one of eight children born to his parents.

Obituary
The funeral of John Lewis, an aged resident of this section, was held at the home of his brother, Fred Lewis, on Thursday. Mr. Lewis was a well known personage over Albany county particularly among the voting population of Guilderland. In his earlier days be was a noted musician and was a member of a drum and fife corps. His particular instrument was the fife, on which he was very proficient. Mr. Lewis had been ill for several months, old age being responsible for his passing away. He was in his 84th year.
