Billings, Charles H.
Birth
Charles H. Billings was born March 29, 1841, in Fulton Township a son of John Billings and Nancy Mariah Bigsby.
Military Service
When he was 20 years old, the beginning of the Civil War brought the recruitment of volunteers. Charles enlisted on October 18, 1861, and was given the rank of Private in Company I of the 76th N. Y. S. V. (NY State Volunteers) that was organized at Cherry Valley in Schoharie County. This regiment was actively engaged in many prominent battles including Gainsville, Second Bull Run, Antietum, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg.
Occupation
Charles was a lifelong farmer.
Marriage & Children
On August 19, 1865, Charles married Amanda M. Tallman a daughter of Jonathan Tallman and Caroline Bouton at the home of the bride's father. They lived in the Huntersland and Middleburgh area throughout their life. They had one child in 1867:

Death
Charles died on December 24, 1911, at 70 years of age, at his daughter's home in Huntersland. He was buried in Huntersland Christian Cemetery.
Obituary
CHARLES BILLINGS - Charles Billings died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Cora Durfee, at Huntersland, Dec. 24th. He was born in 1841 and therefore had reached the age of three score years and ten. At the breakout of the Civil War he enlisted, and Oct. 18th 1861, at 20 years of age became a member of Company H, of the 26th Regiment, N.Y. Volunteers known as the Cherry Valley Regiment. This regiment was actively engaged in many battles prominent among which were Gainsville, Second Bull Run, Antietum, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and the Wilderness. He was by occupation a Farmer and most of his life was spent at Huntersland and vicinity. Several years ago his wife died. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Cora Durfee of Huntersland. He was sick only one week. He was the brother of Wm. Billings of this village. His funeral took place Wednesday. Interment at Huntersland.
