Friedenreich, Johann Christian
Birth
Johann (also known as "John") Friedenreich was born some time before 1750. His parentage has not been definitely determined, but he was from German ancestry.[1].
Occupation
In 1791, Johann had a meat market on the corner of Market Street and Maiden Lane in Albany, NY. He often was called a grocer, victualler, and cordwainer. He may have been the partner of John Shepherd. In 1800 his first ward household housed eight family members and a slave. At that time, he was listed as a member of the Albany Mechanics Society. Albany City directories identified him as a butcher living at 84 South Pearl Street for many years. In 1820, three sons were listed as South End butchers as well.[1]
Military Service
Johann Christian Friedenreich was a Hessian soldier (on British side) during the Revolution. He deserted them and took up the American patriot's cause, serving in John Burgoyne's army.[1]
Marriage and Children
Johann later married Eva Fetterly the daughter of Philip Fetterly & his wife, Anna Margaretha. They lived in the Albany and raised a large family.[1] Records indicate that Johann Christian was married more than once, but this information has not been verified.
Death
Johann died in March 1821 at 69 years of age.[1]
