Birth
Martin Hess was born in 1846, in New York, a son of Peter Hess and Mary Potter.
Marriage and Children
On October 10, 1866 at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Rensselaerville, he married Sarah Catherine Gathen who was born on November 4, 1839, a daughter of Matthew Gathen and Sophia Rissue. Their child, Frank B. Hess was born in 1869.
Military
He has a GAR Marker on his grave site. No further evidence of his military service has yet been found. For instance, the 1865 census for Rensselaerville shows Martin Hess age 19 listed in the household with his parents. In the column that indicates whether or not the individual is or was a soldier, there isn't a check mark.
Life
Martin and Sarah removed to Catskill and operated a hotel.
Death
Sarah died in 1924, Martin died in 1925 Both were buried at Trinity Episcopal Church Cemetery in Rensselaerville.
