Francis Gibbs, Dead At 69

Memorial services for the late Francis C. Gibbs will be held at 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 8 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Altamont. Mr. Gibbs, owner-operator of Gibbs's Hillendale Farm Campground, Knox, since 1963, died Friday, Aug. 24 at St. Peter's Hospital, Albany, after a brief illness. He was 69. A Town of Knox native, Mr. Gibbs was for a time employed by General Electric, Schenectady, and at his father's farm off Pleasant Valley Road before the farm became Hillendale Farm campground. He was also a 38-year member and past chief of the Berne Fire Department and for 14 years was employed as a bus driver by the Berne-Knox-Westerlo schools. Locally he is probably best remembered for the farm-campground, operation, which included an olci-fasliioned' maple sugaring operation, the destination of many field trips by school classes and community groups over the years. Mr. Gibbs was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Altamont. Surviyors include his widow, the former Marion Hilton; a daughter, Mrs. Verlane Coon of Russell, Mass.; a son, Brian R. Gibbs of Knox; his mother, Vertie. Gibbs of Knox; a sister, Mrs. Betty LaGrange of Westerlo; a brother, Alton Gibbs of Hyde Park (Dutchess Co.); and three grandchildren. Private sevices were held under ' the direction of Fredendall Funeral Home, Altamont. Burial was at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Guilderland. Contributions in Mr. Gibb's memory may be made to Berne Ambulance Fund, Berne, N.Y. 12023 or St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 142 Maple Ave., Altamont, N.Y. 12009.
