Life
James' father Abraham Whipple died when he was very young, and he was brought up by his maternal grandparents surrounded by his uncles, who all lived in Berne.[2][1][4][5][6] His grandfather Solomon and uncles Peter Henry Wood (B. Feb 5, 1825, D. July 23, 1900) and John Mathias Shultes Wood (B. May 24, 1829, D. May 5, 1913) were all farmers.[4][1] His uncles Peter and John were about 15 years older than he. When his grandfather Solomon died in 1851, he continued to live on the farm in Berne with his grandmother and uncles.[5] Even after his uncles married and moved into separate homes, his uncles Peter and John lived next store to one another with James and his grandmother Catherine living with Peter.[6]
