Birth
Jacob Slater was born in Nassau, Rensselaer Co., NY on March 17, 1844, a son of Frederick Slater and Margaret Haines.[1]His family came to Westerlo before 1850, and his father was married to Jerusha Lobdell.
His life
In 1860, at age 16, Jacob was working on the Lawrence family farm.

He was promoted to Corporal February, 1864, and was in all the engagements of the Army of the Potomac, from the crossing of the Rapidan till the battle of Petersburg. There he received a wound in his left arm, and died from the effects of it at Washington, July 7, 1864.”
