Birth
Elias Hanes was born on September 28, 1844 in Knox, Albany County, NY to Jacob Hane (B. Sept 1, 1814, D. 1870-1880)[1] and Eve Werner (B. April 5, 1816, D. Jan 23, 1857)[1].[2][3][1] His mother died when he was just 13 years of age and his father was quickly remarried 6 months later to Dinah M. Schoonmaker (B. abt 1831, D.unk).[1] Of his mother's children, he was a middle child of six, but his father's second marriage added three more boys to the family.[1] Elias' surname has been spelled various ways including Hane and Hawes.[4] Elias was a brother to Adam and Amos Hanes. All three brothers died in the Civil War.
Marriage & Children
Elias never married.[2]
Occupation
Elias worked as a farmer before he served in the Civil War.[3]
Life
Elias' father Jacob was Lutheran and attended the Lutheran Church in Berne where he was married both times.[1] Therefore it is likely that Elias also attended this church.
