Obituary
Newton Ketcham
The funeral services of the late Newton Ketcham, who died last Friday of heart trouble after a two week illness, were held from his late home on Sunday at 2 o'clock, Rev. Roscoe M. Giles of the Altamont Reformed church conducting the service. Burial was at the Lake Rural Cemetery, Thompson's Lake. The Barckley Post G. A. R. of which he was a member conducted a service at the grave and taps was sounded.
Mr. Ketcham was born in the town of Knox on October 6, 1844, the son of Henry and Margaret (Williamson) Ketcham. He was the last one of nine children.
His early life was spent on the farm. In September 1864 he enlisted for service in the Civil War and served until mustered out at Washington, July 6, 1865. He was a member of Company A, ninth New York Heavy Artillery which was active in the Shenandoah Valley, at Petersburg and was at Appomattox when General Lee surrendered.
After his return from the war he married Elmina Pier on January 4, 1868 and remained, on the farm until moving to Altamont forty-one years ago. At that time be took up the sale of farm machinery, feed and seeds until the organization of the First National Bank of Altamont fifteen years ago, when he became its first president and had continued to hold, that office until his death.
His wide acquaintance with men of the county and his conservative and wise judgment on business matters have been of great value to this institution, which has made great progress in the few years of its business life.
Mr. Ketcham will not only be missed in his home but in Altamont and the county as well. He leaves a wife and a daughter, Miss Edith Ketcham, and several more distant relatives.
