Born about 1846 in Wright, Schoharie County, NY, the son of James Taggart (June 1823 - ) and Elizabeth (Lizzie) (about 1820 - ) Taggart. His brothers and sisters were:

- James H. J. Taggart (ABT 1851 - ) (Mrs. James H. Taggart's son, Willis William Howe, married Harriet Frances Burgess on September 4, 1918 in Altamont)
- Robert Taggart (ABT 1852 - )

- S. Morgan Taggart (DEC 1862 - December 19, 1937)[1]

John A. Taggart married Elmira M. (or Almira) (ABT 1843 - AFT 1920). In her obituary, Mrs. John Taggart (1849 - May 1, 1924) is named Minerva Jane Hotaling. Their children were:
