Caleb was born on August 4, 1832 at Berne, Albany Co., New York, the son of Solomon Houghtaling and Clarissa Barton.

Caleb married Sarah Jane Siver, a daughter of Martin and Martha Siver on October 27, 1855. They had a son, Gabriel Houghtaling who survived both of his parents.
