Birth
Stephen was born in Phillipstown, Dutchess County, NY on January 19, 1758 a son of Nathaniel Tompkins and Sarah Nelson. [1]
Marriage & Children
He married Sarah Nelson. Their known child:
- Abraham Tompkins who was born at about 1790[1]
Military
He enlisted in September of 1776 at Phillipstown as a Corporal in Colonel Ludendon’s Regiment. He served to May of 1777.
In August of 1777, he enlisted as a private in Colonel Ludendon’s Regiment and served through October.
In June or July of 1778 he again enlisted and served as a private until September of 1778.
In July of 1779 he again enlisted as a private and served 3 weeks.
In May of 1780 he enlisted for 6 months in Colonel Drake’s Regiment.
He was engaged in no major battles.
After the war, he moved to Coxsackie in Greene County, then to Coeymans, and later to Allegany County. He settled in Westerlo at about 1803.
Death
Sarah died on September 29, 1846 in Westerlo. Stephen died on August 3, 1854. Both were buried at Westerlo Central Cemetery.

No family information was provided in his pension file. The name Caleb Tompkins who resided in Rensselaerville was given, but no relationship was mentioned.
