Turner, Alice Minnie

Birth

Alice was born April 3, 1891 at the Turner Farm in the Town of Knox, near the village of Berne. She was the only child of Jay P. Turner and Ella Miller. She was named for two aunts who had died before she was born. One was Alice Turner, her father's sister and the other was Minnie Miller, her mother's sister who died of consumption at the age of 17.

Education

She attended Stoney Brook School located on Rock Road. The school stood on land that had been taken from the Turner Farm. She next attended high school in Altamont boarding there during the week. She made the trip each week in a wagon or sleigh driven by her father, occasionally riding on the stage. She continued her education at Albany State College for Teachers majoring in German, Latin and Mathematics.

Occupation

She taught school in Castleton, Milford and in the one room schoolhouse she had attended as a child. She was a wonderful mother, who was devoted to her family. She was a fine cook and good manager of the household. She made separate hand written copies of family genealogy in composition books for her children and grandchildren.

Marriage & Children

While in Milford she met Lee A. Francis. They were married at the Turner Farm in Knox January of 1919. They lived in Cooperstown where their first three children were born-Jay Charles, Edward Andrew and Mary Ella. In 1929 they moved to Oneonta where their fourth child, Ruth Mae was born.

Death

Alice died in 1967 at the age of 76 and was buried at Lakewood Cemetery, Cooperstown next to her husband.
