Life
James B. Avery, age 12 years, can be found in the 1850 US Census living in Broome with his father Russell, who was a wheelwright, and his mother.[2] Six years later on February 2, 1856 his mother Anna died in Broome. Soon after James and his father, who remarried a much younger woman named Mary, moved to Rensselaerville, Albany County, NY. They can be found living there in the 1860 US Census.[3] James was working as a farm laborer for John C. Dean and his wife Anna.[3] His father, Russell, was now a farmer and living with his wife Mary (B. 1832), Harriet W. Mackey (B. 1853) and young son George W. Avery (B. 1859).[3]
James has not been found after his Civil War service.
