Walter Bassler, Berne, NY

Birth

Walter was born on April 24, 1870, the son of Levinus (Lavinus) Bassler and Katherine E. Weidman.

Marriage

On January 4, 1899, Walter maried to Mary E. Kirkpatrick in the hamlet of Berne.

Life

Walter Bassler expects, to occupy the old Haverly homestead, in the town of Knox, during the coming year.

Walter Bassler is moving on the Merselis farm which he bought, and Miles Posson and son will work the Gallup farm the coming season.

REWARD Twenty-five dollars reward for information that will lead to the arrest and conviction of the parties who entered my house on April 15th and stole old coins and other articles. Walter Bassler, Berne.

  • Walter Purchased farm in 1910 on what was to become Michienzi Rd. off Rock Road in Berne & Knox. A tree in the woodlot on this farm has his initials carved into it dated 1910.

Death

He died on September 25, 1955, in Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, N.Y., and was buried in Berne and Beaverdam Cemetery in Berne.

Obituary

Published in the Altamont Enterprise, September 30, 1955:

Walter Basler died Sept. 25 at the Ellis hospital, Schenectady. Mr. Bassler spent most of his life in Berne, where he was a successful farmer. His wife, Mary Kirkpatrick, passed away many years ago. He was a regular attendant and for many years an elder of the Berne Reformed church. He is survived by a brother, George Bassler. Funeral services were held Wednesday from Berne Reformed church.

Legacy

NEW BUILDING TO BE DEDICATED BY CHURCH FEB. 16th A special dedication service for the Friendship House- (a Christian educational-activities unit) Of the First Reformed church of Berne will be held in the new church parlor at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16... ...One-third of the financial obligation for the construction of this unit was designated from the estate of Walter Bassler, and the remaining two-thirds is being received through contributions and pledges.
