Birth

Hercules Sayre was born on August 12, 1842 in Rensselaerville to Benjamin Franklin Sayre (B. Nov 15, 1810 Rensselaerville, D. Feb 21, 1893) and Lucinda Wickes (B. Nov 15, 1810 Norton Hill, M. Oct 8, 1838, Oct 5, 1894). He was their only child.

Marriage and Children

On December 12, 1866, Hercules married Helen Cross (B. April 22, 1842 Rensselaerville, D. July 13, 1887) at the residence of Mr. Cross. The witnesses were the parents of Hercules (un-named) and parents of Helen (un-named) as well as Miss Julia Cook, Isaac Cross and Miss M. M. Bates.[1]

Hercules and Helen had one child Estelle Sayre (B. November 6, 1867)

Occupation

Hercules grew up on his father's farm and began farming at an early age. In the 1860, 1870 and 1880 US Censuses, Hercules was recorded as a farmer living with his father at their Rensselaerville farm.

However by the 1890s, the Albany and Poughkeepsie City Directories indicate that he was working for the IRS in Albany at the US Gov’t building at 664 Broadway. He was living in Poughkeepsie, first at 18 Parker Ave and later at 26 Balding Ave.

Death

Hercules died on November 28, 1908, at 66 years of age. He was buried two days later on November 30, 1908, in Rensselaerville.

His wife, Helen Cross, had predeceased him having died on July 13, 1887.

His estate, which included the Rensselaerville farm, passed to his daughter Estelle Sayre and on September 9, 1915 she sold the farm to Elroy C. Mackey. On August 15th 1935, the 115 acre "Benjamin F. Sayre farm in Rensselaerville" was to be auctioned in front of the Albany County Court House.
