Victor was born in Durham, Greene Co., NY in November of 1843, a son of Ward Haines and Lucretia Hudleston.[2] After the death of his father, his mother married Philander Wickham.

Before he served in the Civil War, he worked as a farmer.[1] At about 1860, Victor came to Westerlo and worked as a farm laborer on the farm of George Anderson and his wife, Elizabeth.
