Birth
John Chesbro was born about 1840 in (Greene County, NY)[1] Albany, NY.[2] At this point we do not know his ancestry. His surname is spelled many different ways but Chesbro was the preferred spelling by his grandson Clinton John Chesbro. John used the alias John Castle while in the Civil War.
Marriage & Children
Before 1874, he married a woman named Ella who was born in September of 1850.[3] They had one son Lewis Chesbro in August 1874.[3]

Life
In 1880, John was living in the city of Albany at #8 Central Avenue with his wife Ella and five year old son Lewis in a two family house with the family of Christian Schurr a German grocer.[4] John was working as a driver. A decade later, he was living in Westerlo when the 1890 US Veterans Census was taken.[5] He died just after the census was taken and in 1900 his widow Ella was living in Westerlo with her son Lewis, daughter in law Anna and grandson Clinton John.[6] In this census she was recorded as a farmer who owned the farm. Her son Lewis was recorded as a day laborer.
Death
John died on October 18, 1890[7].His widow, Ella, filed for her pension on Nov 7, 1890.[8] His wife Ella lived for many more years being recorded in the 1900 and 1910 US Censuses in Westerlo.
