Robert Lawyer Sr. was born April 9, 1927 at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, the son of Ford and Ruth Lawyer.

Robert Lawyer Sr. BERNE - Robert Lawyer Sr. was a man known by many names. He was called Father, Pop, Daddy, Grampy, and Poppy. "He was a man of the mountain," said his son James Schager. "He was always there to help everybody out." He died on Tuesday, March 2,2004 after a short illness. Mr. Lawyer was born at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, the son of the late Ford and Ruth Lawyer. He lived in Schoharie and Altamont before moving to Berne. He graduated with high honors from Altamont High School, and served in the United States Army During World War II. Mr. Lawyer started his own logging business in the 1950's. He owned and operated Lawyer Excavation in Berne, a business he started in the late 1960's. He loved his job, his family said. The business will remain in the family. His children pledge to carry it on, Mr. Schager said. He was a member of the Boyd Hilton Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Helderberg American Legion in Altamont. "He had many friends," said Mr. Schager. He had a nickname for each of his grandchildren. "He had no underdogs as each and every one of them were his favorites." In reflecting on his father's death, Mr. Schager said.The bear went over the mountain to see what he could see." Mr. Schager said that was the song Mr. Lawyer sang to his children when they were little. "It was a special song," said Schager. Schager and his family had a final wish, "Rest in Peace, Pop, and enjoy eternity with family and loved ones." He is survived by children, Karen Lynne Wagner, and her husband, Fred, Robert Lawyer Jr, and his wife, Lori, James Schager, Sharon Knapp, and her husband, Nelson, Joey Tubbs and his wife, Rhondalyn, Shirley Waite, and her husband, Dennis; and 12 grandchildren. His daughter, Jane; his wife, Gladys, and an infant sister died before him. A funeral service will be Friday at noon at the Fredendall Funeral Home, 199 Main Street in Altamont. Calling hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday. Burial will be in the Knox Cemetery in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Road, Loudonville. Also survived by several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held from the Fredendall Funeral Home, Altamont, Wednesday afternoon, Rev. James K. Hilton officiating.
