KNOX -- Howard A. Schoonmaker Sr., 80, of Pleasant Valley Road died Wednesday at home.

Mr. Schoonmaker was born in Albany and lived most of his life in Berne. He attended Cornell University, the state university colleges at Brockport and Farmingdale, and Schenectady County Community College.

He served with the Army Air Forces' 389th Bomb Group in England during World War II and attained the rank of staff sergeant.

Birth

Howard was born February 22,1916 in Albany, New York. His parents were Roscoe C. Schoonmaker and Catherine Roney.

Education

Howard attended Cornell University, the state university colleges at Brockport and Farmingdale, and Schenectady County Community College.

Marriage and Children

Howard married Dorothy Florence Sturgess (parents were Lewis Toles Sturgess and Jennie Crounse Lewis) on November 17, 1939. They had a son Howard A. Schoonmaker II and daughter Beth Ann Schoonmaker.

Occupation

Mr. Schoonmaker operated a sporting-goods store from his home for many years. He also was a self-employed farmer and carpenter. He was a vocational instructor for 17 years for the state division of Youth at Camp Cass in Rensselaerville.

Military Service

Howard served with the Army Air Force's 389th Bomb Group in England and attained the rank of staff sergeant.
