Birth
Josiah was born on June 29, 1760 at Harwick, Barstable Co. MA, a son of Thomas Hinkley and Elizabeth Decosta.
Military
While a resident of Fredericksburgh, Dutchess County, NY, Josiah volunteered on July 31, 1776 and served as a private in Captain Mott’s company of Colonel Swartwout’s New York Regiment, was in the battle of White Plains and discharged on January 1, 1777.
He immediately reenlisted and served as needed until 1779 in Colonel Dykeman’s Regiment.
Marriage & Children
At about 1782 in Dutchess Co., he married Alice Kelley who was born at about 1760. Their known children:
- Mary born about 1783 , married Jonathan Scofield
- Hannah born about 1787, married Charles Dyer
- Josiah Jr. b about 1790
- Elsey born at about 1793, married Carpenter Bishop
At about 1802 he married the widow, Elizabeth Ellis Lambert who was born at about 1765. Their known children:
- Elizabeth born about 1803 married Dr. Edward Ruggles

Death
