Birth
Cyrus B. Ostrom was born in Bern, September 15, 1826 to Henry Ostrom (B. 1804, D. bef 1860) and [1]Catherine West[2] Cyrus was the oldest of nine children.[1] George Rogers Howell recorded his middle initial as P.[3]
Marriage & Children
After June 1, 1855, Cyrus married Emma Smith (B. 1834, D. 1916), who was the daughter of Asa Smith and Eva Warner, and the widow of William Wilday (B. 1825, D. Nov 1854).[1] She has been recorded as Amy.[1][4][5]
She brought three children into the marriage.[1] Cyrus and Emma had the following children:
- Charles Brate (B. Mar 1856, D. Dec 2, 1930)[1][4]
Note: He was known as Chot and took the surname of his stepfather James S. Brate[1]
- Ellen Ostrom (B. Oct 1859, D. unk)[1][4]
Occupation
Cyrus Ostrom was a blacksmith by trade.[1][4]He was a shoemaker[2]
Life
Cyrus Ostrom is remembered for having kept a huge pine log trough in front of the Reinhart hotel filled with small minnows in the spring and summer to be used for bait for fishing.[1] In 1860 he was living in East Berne and working as a blacksmith.[4] He and his wife had her daughter Mariah Wilday (B. abt Mar 6, 1853, D. Nov 6, 1882)and their two young children living with them.[4]

Death
He was killed in battle at Port Hudson, June 14, 1863, and was buried at Port Hudson.[7] After his death his wife Emma married James S. Brate (B. 1839, D. May 28, 1915).[1] His wife Emma Smith Wilday Ostrom Brate died in 1916 and she was buried at the Westerlo Rural Cemetery in Westerlo, Albany Co, NY.[1]
