Miles was born in Knox at about 1847, a son of David and Catherine Swart.

He married on October 15, 1873,at the Lutheran Church in Berne, Julia Pier, a daughter of Jacob Pier and Catherine Jane Truax[1] who was born in May of 1852 and had the following known children:
