Leona M, Trotter, a mother of five and also a foster mother, died Thursday, July 17, 2003, at her home in Chestertown, following a long illness. She was 86. "She was the greatest mother on earth," said her daughter, Bernice C. Hart of Chestertown.

Mrs. Trotter was born in Rensselaer, the daughter of the late Clara Brothers and Fred Mergenthaler.

She worked for the Cooperative Extension of Albany County before retiring in 1982. Before retiring to Chestertown, she ran a coffee shop in Knox.

In her free time, she enjoyed the outdoors. "She was an avid fisherman," said Mrs. Hart. She is survived by her husband, Gordon J. Trotter of Chestertown; three daughters, Bernice C.
