[Knox]--Ronald A. Mason, USMC (Ret.), 71, died Friday at St. Clare's Hospital in Schenectady.  Mr. Mason was born in Albany, and graduated from Albany High School in 1944.  He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and received his bachelor's degree from the University of Omaha while in the Marine Corps.  He served in World War II; in Korea, where he was one of the "Chosin Few"; and in Vietnam.  He received the Bronze Star for bravery and valor and the Purple Heart for injuries he received in Korea.  He served at the Pentagon with the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and retired in 1971 as a colonel after 27 years of service.  After retiring from the military, he received a law degree from Georgetown Law School.  He practiced law in Albany and started his own practice in Knox, from which he had recently retired.  Mr. Mason was among the first Republicans elected in the town of Knox, where he served as town justice for two terms.  He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Duanesburg, and of the vestry of the church; the New York State Magistrates Association; the Guilderland Elks Club; the Helderberg Kiwanis Club; and Boyd Hilton Post 7062, VFW, in Altamont.  He was active in the Marine Corps Retired Officers' Association.  He had served on the U.S.S. Leyte (CV-32 Company) and H3-1 Company.  Following retirement, he was active in organizing reunions for fellow veterans of those units.  Survivors include his wife, Joyce Noppa Mason; a son, Jeffrey A. Mason of Knox; a daughter, Margaret L. Mason-Donnelly of St. Louis, Missouri; a sister, Dorothy Diane Yacowenia of St. Johnsville (Fulton Co.); four grandchildren--Brian, Matthew, Kaitlin, and Patrick Donnelly.  His first wife, Phyllis L. Mason, died in 1988.  A son, Ronald A. Mason Jr., died in 1979, and a brother, Robert D. Mason, died last year.  A memorial service was held Tuesday at Christ Episcopal Church in Duanesburg, with a graveside committal service in Knox Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Helderberg Ambulance Squad, P.O. Box 54, East Berne, NY 12059, the Capital District Dialysis Center, 650 McClellan St., Schenectady, NY 12304, or the St. Clare's Hospital Building Fund, 600 McClellan St., Schenectady, NY 12304.</i>
