Stephen Holmes Willsey was the son of [[Andrew Willsey]] (B. Oct 26, 1807, D. Oct 24, 1899) and [[Irene Doty]] (B. Jan 13, 1813, D. Oct 6, 1856).<ref name="USCensus">US Censuses</ref><ref name="Bernehistory">Bernehistory.org</ref><ref name="Town and City Registers">Town and City Registers of Men Who Served in the Civil War</ref> He was born on April 24, 1843 (or April 11, 1843<ref name="Town and City Registers"/>) in Berne, Albany County, NY.<ref name="Bernehistory"/> He was one of the younger children in a family of ten children.<ref name="Bernehistory"/> He was named after his grandfather Stephen Holmes Doty, whose ancestors came over on the Mayflower. His mother died in 1856, and then his father married [[Almira A. Nelson]] (B. abt Nov 27, 1823, D. Mar 20, 1923) and by her he had a half brother.<ref name="Bernehistory"/> Stephen went by the name of Holmes.

After June 1, 1865, Stephen married [[Catherine Louise Hayes]] (B. abt 1845, D. after 1930), who was the daughter of [[Thomas J. ==Life==
Stephen Holmes Willsey was born in 1843 in Berne and continued to live there until he served in the Civil War. In 1850, he was living with his large family in Berne, where his father Andrew was a farmer, who owned his own farm.<ref name="1850Census">1850 US Census, Berne, Albany Co, NY</ref> The same was true in 1855.<ref name="1855Census">1855 NY State Census, Berne, Albany Co, NY</ref> By 1860, his father had remarried.<ref name="1860Census">1860 US Census, Berne, Albany Co, NY</ref> Holmes enlisted in the 3rd Cavalry Regiment with his younger brother [[Abraham Ferris Willsey]].<ref name="1865Census">1865 NY State Census, Berne, Albany Co, NY</ref> They both served about 9 months and mustered out at the end of the war without any injuries.<ref name="1865Census"/> When they returned from the war, they went to live with their father and his wife in Berne, where they both worked as gunsmiths.<ref name="1865Census"/> In 1870, Holmes was no longer living with his parents.<ref name="1870Census">1870 US Census, Berne, Albany Co, NY</ref> By 1880, Holmes had married and had two children. ==Death==
Stephen Holmes Willsey died on June 18, 1912 at Lone Tree, Blunt, Codington County, South Dakota.<ref name="Death"/><ref name="Bernehistory"/> After his death, his wife Louise filed on June 29, 1912 for his Civil War pension as a widow.<ref name="Pension"/> His wife survived for several more decades as she was still alive in 1930 at the age of 84 and living in Miami, Dade County, Florida with her daughter Pearl and son in law Charles E. Park.<ref name="1930Census"/>
