William Wilcox was born 1837 or 1839<ref name="Bernehistory">Bernehistory.org</ref> in [[Berne]] the son of [[John B. Wilcox]] (B. 1807, D. Sept 6, 1890) and [[Magdalena (Lena) Warner]] (B. Aug 28, 1810, D. 1857).<ref name="Bernehistory"/> William was one of three children.<ref name="Bernehistory"/> His mother died when he was about 20 years of age, and then his father married [[Margaret Wright]] (B. 1822, D. March 28, 1897).<ref name="Bernehistory"/> His surname has also been spelled Willcox.

On October 15, 1857 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Berne, William married [[Sarah Elizabeth Northrup]] (B. May 5, 1837, D. 1859), who was the daughter of [[Alvah H. Northrup]] and [[Maria L. Ball]].<ref name="Bernehistory"/> Sarah died in 1857 following the birth of their daughter. William married a second time on October 11,1864 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Berne to [[Charlotte Ester Dyer]].<ref name="Bernehistory"/> Charlotte, who was born November 2, 1843, was the daughter of [[James Dyer]] and [[Mary Margaret Engle]].<ref name="Bernehistory"/> They had two children:

In 1850 William was living with his parents in Berne and he reportedly was 11 years of age thus born 1839.<ref name="1850Census">1850 US Census, Berne, Albany Co, NY</ref> His father [[John B. Wilcox]] was a farmer who owned land.<ref name="1850Census"/> In the next decade William married. By 1860 he was a farmer who owned land in Berne and was living with his wife [[Sarah Elizabeth Northrup]] and [[Daniel Secor]] who was a farm laborer.<ref name="1860Census">1860 US Census, Berne, Albany Co, NY</ref> In 1865 after serving in the Civil War, William was living with his wife Charlotte in a frame house valued at $600 in Berne.<ref name="1865Census">1865 NY State Census, Berne, Albany Co, NY</ref> He was working as a blacksmith.<ref name="1865Census"/>
