His mustering out papers as a result of his death gave his age as 18 when he enlisted on 6 Jan. 1844 at Troy and then Albany. He was a Pvt. when he died 16 Nov. 1844 at Andersonville, GA. of disease. He had been previously reported as missing at Petersburg on 14 June. He was single and his parents were John and Catherine West. He was born in Berne, Albany Co. and was 18 when he enlisted. He had gray eyes, sandy hair, a light complexion, and was 5 ft., 6 in. tall.
