&amp;lt;!--Insert birth and parent information text here --&amp;gt;Walter E. Ward was born on December 5, 1853 in Westerlo to the [[Rev. Gilbert Ward]] and [[Emeline Garrett]].  His mother had been born in New Baltimore, Greene Co, NY.  His grandfather was Gilbert Ward, a pioneer farmer in Westerlo.   &lt;br /&gt;

&amp;lt;!--Insert schooling information here.--&amp;gt;Walter was educated in local Westerlo public schools during the winter as he worked on his father's farm in the summer. At 17 years of age, he  went to the Collegiate Institute in Claverack and was taught be Reverend Alonzo Flack.  To pay for his education, he worked part time as a teacher.  In 1873, he entered Wesleyan University where he graduated in 1877 with honors. He then moved to Albany where he attended Albany Law School and read law with the firm of Hungerford and Hotaling there.&lt;br /&gt;

After he graduated from Wesleyan, he privately taught Latin and Greek while attending Albany Law School.  When he was admitted to the Bar, he practiced law in Albany.  He went into a partnership with Frederick W. Cameron and the firm was called Ward and Cameron.  Walter specialized in patent law. &lt;br /&gt;
