Abner was a farmer.
==Marriage & Children==
He married at about 1807 in Knox, Gertrude Ward who was born at about 1783<ref name="Bernehistory">Bernehistory.org</ref>. They had the following known children:
*Solomon Van Benscoten b. May 30, 1808<ref name="Bernehistory"/>
*Jermina Wyntie Van Benscoten b. February 15, 1810 married William Vanderpool. <ref name="Bernehistory"/> Not named in her father’s will
*Eleanor (Nellie) Ann Van Benscoten b. February 9, 1812 married Peter Palmatier<ref name="Bernehistory"/>. Not mentioned in her father’s will
*Margaret Van Benscoten b. March 14, 1814 married Richard Southwick<ref name="Bernehistory"/>
*John Van Benscoten b. March 20, 1815 married Anna Maria Townsend<ref name="Bernehistory"/> His son, [[Jacob Van Benscoten]] was a Civil War soldier.
*Teunis Van Benscoten b. November 23, 1817 married Hannah Rockwell<ref name="Bernehistory"/>
*Sarah Maria (Sally) b. about 1822 was unmarried and had a daughter Nancy Ann. Both named in the will.
Abner’s first wife died and he married again before 1850, Sarah, who was not mentioned in his will and presumably died between 1855 and 1858.
==Death==
Gertrude Ward Van Benscoten died on May 10, 1821 and was buried in the family burial ground on their property in Knox. Abner died November 13, 1862<ref name="Bernehistory">Bernehistory.org</ref>
