Robert Keating in the book "[[Carnival of Blood]]" records that he died of catarrh.<ref name="Carnival"/> He was buried in grave number 5534 at Andersonville.<ref name="Carnival"/> After his death on June 19, 1871, his father Cornelius Steiner filed for his Civil War pension.<ref name="Pension">Civil War Pension Index, Ancestry.com</ref>
