==Life==
Allen enlisted in the Civil War after the harvest was completed in the fall of 1861. He re-enlisted in Company D of the 91st NY Infantry Regiment. After he mustered out at the end of the war in July 1865, he returned to Berne.

In 1880 Allen, who was still single, was living with with his father Peter and his sister Elizabeth. He and his father were both farming together. They lived next to Allen's brother [[John Shultes]] (B. May 10, 1835, D. 1911) and John's wife [[Josephine Schell]]. After this census, Allen married Ophelia.

After their marriage, Allen and Ophelia continued to live in Berne and Allen was recorded there in the 1890 US Veteran's Census.<ref name="1890Census">1890 US Veterans Census, Berne, Albany Co, NY</ref> In this record, he mentions no disability, however by August 28, 1890 he filed for his invalid pension from NY State.<ref name="CivilWarPension">Civil War Pension Index, Ancestry.com</ref>

In early September 1892, Allen nearly drowned when a local bridge across the Switzkill creek collapse under the weight of a team of horses and load of grain.<ref>[[Altamont Enterprise]], Sept 9, 1892, Altamont, NY</ref>

At some point after September 1892, Allen and Ophelia retired to St. Cloud, Osceola County, Florida. In 1920 at the age of 80 years, Allen was working in St. Cloud as a house carpenter.<ref name="1920Census">1920 US Census, St. Cloud, Osceola Co, Fla.</ref>

==Death==
Allen Shultes died before February 13, 1926 probably in St. Cloud Osceola, Florida. On that date his wife Ophelia applied for his Civil War pension from NY State.<ref name="CivilWarPension"/> His wife Ophelia died on October 29, 1929 in Voorheesville, Albany County, NY.<ref name="Bernehistory"/>

"While Mr. Allen Shultes and Chas. Saulsberg were crossing the bridge near that part of the Switzkill creek known locally as the old water, the bidge gave way and the team with a load of grain went down with the timbers of the bridge, into the water. Mr. Shultes had a narrow escape from drowning, and his companion was badly bruised. The horses escaped serious injry but were considerably scratched. The commissioner had been notified that the bridge was unsafe, and his negligence in attending to the matter is severely criticised. Other bridges in the vicinity are in equally unsafe condition and it is to be hoped that these will be repaired before the occurance of a fatal accident."
