After he returned from the Civil War in 1865 William was living with his parents and siblings, and working as a farmer.<ref name="1865Census">1865 NY State Census, Berne, Albany Co, NY</ref>

William's wife Maria died on March 24, 1890 at only 43 years and 10 months.<ref name="Bernehistory"/> William lived for another decade, dying on June 29, 1901.<ref name="Bernehistory"/>
