After Adam returned from the Civil War, he lived with his family.<ref name="1870Census">1870 US Census, Middleburg, Schoharie Co, NY</ref> In 1870 he was living with his parents and siblings in Middleburgh, Schoharie County and working as a farm laborer.<ref name="1870Census"/> A decade later, he was living with his widowed mother Anna in Berne and his younger brother Jacob, and working as a farm laborer.<ref name="1880Census">1880 US Census, Berne, Albany Co, NY</ref> The 1890 US Veterans census recorded Adam as living in West Berne.<ref name="1880Census">1880 US Census, Berne, Albany Co, NY</ref> After the death of his mother and brother in law, Adam lived with his older sister [[Rachel Reed]] and her family in Berne.<ref name="1900Census">1900 US Census, Berne, Albany Co, NY</ref><ref name="1905Census">1905 NY State Census, Berne, Albany Co, NY</ref> <ref name="1915Census">1915 NY State Census, Berne, Albany Co, NY</ref> Ultimately his nephew [[Henry Crane]] took over financial responsibility for Rachel and Adam.
