William Posson was the son of Peter Posson, Jr., and Anna West. He was born on 30 November 1800, in Greene County.

William married Mary Catharine Becker (dau. of John Becker and Rebecca Schaeffer) on 11 May 1825 at Reformed Church, Schoharie, Schoharie, NY.
