Irving Lainhart was born on April 18,1872 at tha Lainhart farm on Lainhart Road north of Altamont<ref name="AM1">Altamont Man, 90, Marks Birthday; a Lifelon Resident. [[Altamont Enterprise]]. April 20, 1962.</ref> Irving was the son of Stephen H. Lainhart (1841 - 1923)<ref name="BH">Berne, NY - Family Files on http://www.BerneHistory.org </ref> and Mary Magdalene Frederick (July 24, 1844 - July 18, 1909)<ref name="BH" />. His brother was:<br />

Irving Lainhart attended Dunnsville Distric School and the Albany Business college where he took the commercial business course.<ref name="AM1" /><br />

During his business career he worked in the grocery stores of Abram Tygert, Pitts Bros. and Emmett Mynderse, in Altamont, then built his own department store, opening it in the spring of 1910. He was in business for 15 years on the site now occupied by the Albany Free Library. Mr. Lainhart then went with the John G. Myers Co. in Albany and served there for 26 years, retiring in 1950 at the age of 78.<ref name="AM1" /><br />
