Alvah came to Otsego County, New York, later to Knox, Albany County. He was a farmer. He was a Baptist in religion, and a Democrat in politics<ref name=" Hudson-Mohawk Valley Families "/>

Alvah married Amanda Tyler, born at Knox in 1803, the daughter of Jesse Tyler<ref name=" Hudson-Mohawk Valley Families "/>and his wife Eunice<ref name="Bernehistory">Bernehistory.org</ref>, at about 1823.
