Eli Deitz was born in Berne ca. 1837, the son of David Deitz and Martha Danforth. His brother [[Samuel Deitz]] was also a soldier in the Civil War. Their father presumably died before 1850.<ref name="bhp">[[Berne Historical Project]]</ref> His brother, Samuel, listed his parents as[[David Dietz]] and Martha Wright on his registration to serve in the Civil War. It is possible that their mother remarried and Wright was her current surname.
