==Birth==
David Devoe was born on Janurary 3, 1837 to [[Henry Ira Devoe]] (B. May 19, 1812,D. Apr 6, 1862) and [[Sarah V. Winne]] (B. Nov 6, 1814), D. Nov 13, 1891).<ref name="Bernehistory">Bernehistory.org</ref> He was the oldest of 10 children. He was baptized at the 2nd Reformed Dutch Church by Reverend H. E. Waring. The witnesses were his parents and the record confirms his mother's maiden name.<ref name="2nd Ref">2nd Reformed Dutch Church records, page 19, Bernehistory.org</ref>

==Education==
He attended the district school until sixteen years of age, followed by two terms at Fort Plain (N. Y.)Seminary.<ref name="Landmarks">[[Landmarks of Albany County]], NY, Edited by Amasa J. Parker, Albany, NY</ref>

==Occupation==
He then followed farming up to the time of the beginning of the war of the Rebellion, with the exception of teaching school one winter. Subsequently he has taught school nineteen winter terms, and has been assessor six years; in politics he is a Democrat.<ref name="Landmarks"/><br>
In 1866 he went on a whaling voyage, and serving ten months left the ship at the Island St. Catharina. Brazil, whence he went
to Montevideo, spent ten months between there and Buenos Ayres and Paraguay, and returned thence to New Orleans, arriving at the latter place April 7, 1868, having been gone two years. <ref name="Landmarks"/>

Under the first call for 75,000 men he enlisted on the second day after the call in the 18th N.Y.Vols., Colonel Jackson's Regiment. He was engaged in both Bull Run battles, both attacks on Fredericksburg, at South Mountain and Antietam. His father died in April, 1862, and he obtained a furlough to come home, thereby escaping the dangers and privations of the Peninsula campaign, and returned and served his term of enlistment, being corporal when he was discharged.<ref name="Landmarks"/>
