-Peter was a farmer. He was given 50 acres of the original farm from his father, Col.Johan Jost Dietz, in 1813. And in 1820, another 50 acres of the farm in Beaverdam, Town of Berne, Albany, NY. Peter Ives recieved that part of the farm to the east of the Col. Dietz house across a stream called the Dietz Kill on an early farm survey, where he built a barn and the original part of the present Descartes house about 1835. Some brick was used, and that year brick from the Col. Dietz farm was used to build the new [[b:St. Paul's Lutheran Church|St. Paul's Lutheran Church]] in Bernville. A stone mill pond dam on the Dietz Kill between  the two houses provided power for a saw mill. Peter's son, Abraham Dietz, recieved this farm before 1854. The town line between Knox and Berne separated the two farms.
