David H. Crawford was born in Westerlo, Albany County, NY in about 1835.<ref name="Carnival">Keating, Robert, [[Carnival of Blood]]: The Civil War Ordeal of the Seventh New York Heavy Artillery, Published by Butternut and Blue, Baltimore, Md 1998</ref> His parents were [[John Crawford]] (B. abt 1800, D. bet 1850-1860) and his wife Hannah (B. abt 1801, D. after 1870).<ref name="1850Census">1850 US Census, Westerlo, Albany Co, NY</ref><ref name="1860Census">1860 US Census, Westerlo, Albany Co, NY</ref><ref name="1870Census">1870 US Census, Westerlo, Albany Co, NY</ref> David was the eldest boy in a family of seven and he had three older sisters.

Before he enlisted in the Civil War, David was a teacher.<ref name="Carnival"/>

==Life==
In the 1850 US Census, David was recorded living in Westerlo, Albany County, NY with his family.<ref name="1850Census">1850 US Census, Westerlo, Albany Co, NY</ref> His father John was a farmer, who owned land. Living next door to them was the family of [[Wilkins Crawford Sr.]] (B. abt 1812, D. Jan 10, 1869). By 1860 it appears that his father was dead, and David was living with his mother Hannah and several of his siblings.<ref name="1860Census"/> David was recorded as a day laborer, while his mother was recorded as a farmer and his younger brother John as a farm laborer.

==Death==
David H. Crawford died on May 27, 1864 at North Anna, Va.<ref name="Carnival"/><ref name="Heroes of Albany"/> His death was unfortunate as he had made it through the battle and was killed at the end of the day when they were moving off the battle field. On that day, David had been one of three Color Guard Corporals, who were responsible for the national flags. He was wrapping up the flag to protect it as it was carried when he was shot in the head. At the time, Sgt Major Fred Lockley had stopped to help him and as David fell, Lockley grabbed the flag and took it to safety. David was buried on the battlefield.<ref name="Carnival"/>
