==Life==
In 1850 Alexander Brate was living with his parents and older brothers in Westerlo, where his father was a farmer. Living next store was his grandparents, [[Martin Brate Sr.]] and Elizabeth.<ref name="1850Census">1850 US Census, Westerlo, Albany Co, NY</ref> Ten years later, in 1860, the family was living in similar circumstances however Alexander's grandfather had died and he had a younger brother.<ref name="1860Census">1860 US Census, Westerlo, Albany Co, NY</ref> Alexander then served in the Civil War. After the war, he has not been found in the 1870 US Census, however in 1880 he was in Westerlo working as a stone cutter and living with [[Francis Brate (B. abt 1815)]] and his wife Catherine.<ref name="1880Census">1880 US Census, Westerlo, Albany Co, NY</ref> He was recorded in the 1890 US Veterans Census in Westerlo however no data of his health or service was provided.<ref name="1890Census">1890 US Veterans Census, Westerlo, Albany Co, NY</ref>

The information from the 1850 census indicates that Alexander Brate and Baltus Brate were brothers, but the name given by Alexander on the register indicates that Alexander's mother was Mariah Dunbar. Baltus was 5 years older than Alexander.
